What is my addiction, you ask? Well, it’s simple K-dramas. I swear I’m addicted, but that’s not even the story, so I’ll start from the middle and hope I can bring it to a full cirle.
About 5 months ago when I published the first part of this post, what I had in mind for a part 2 or follow up post has definitely changed. At the time I had just noticed I was getting pretty drawn to watching K-dramas a lot. Any little thing that happened to me, I found a drama that best suited the situation and got lost in the fictional world. If something upset me and I didn’t want to deal with it, I started or continued a drama. If I wanted to relax, there was a K-drama to watch. If I wanted to feel all fuzzy, wozzy, buzzy, there was already a K-drama to work its magic. In fact, if I wanted to bawl my eyes out for no reason other than: it has been long I felt this emosh and/or cried, I hopped on a sad drama for all the emotional roller coaster I was looking for.
At the back of my sane mind, I was observing myself like omo, if I didn’t do something about this, then I’d be on the losing side of the battle of wills. So I set out to fight for my way. My way of winning and not sinking deeper into this addiction of a thing. I decided to fast off any type of K-drama whatsoever for a week and let me tell you, it was verrrrrry hard! Any little break, I was already launching my Netflix app on my phone to watch a drama and then I’d remember no more drama, then I’d sigh and close the app. At the end of the first day’s fast, I wasn’t having it again and then I made up my mind to do something I only ever dreamed about; Learning Korean.
I came to a resolve that I would learn the language, it seemed very practical and reasonable too. I had and have always dreamed of a time where I could watch more K-dramas without having to read subtitles just so I could do other things whilst watching the dramas too. Anyway, my journey to learning a new language began and I was hyped, initial gragra. Downloaded apps to assist me, got some PDF’s as well and saved a number of Youtube videos. Omo, I was very ready. Ready to curb by K-drama addiction and ready to learn the language, seemed like a win-win to me. And so the next couple of days went by fast but oh so slowly to me. The struggle I had with not watching any drama and learning Korean instead was not from here.
The fourth day of my fast came, my initial gragra to learn the language started to wane little by little but I held out because the fast would be over soon. At that point, I just wanted the fast days to be over, I needed to watch Itaewon Class already my one and only 박서준 (Park Seo-Joon) was featuring as the male lead actor. I tried hard not to lose focus though so I chose to be more serious with learning Korean and in two days, I mastered Hangul ( Korean alphabets). I was amazed and fired up, the ginger hit differently this time and I just kept at it doing my bit and counting down to the last day of the fast.
Anyway, the final day of the fast came and went by so quickly, I hopped on my Itaewon Class drama like a thirsty dog who has finally found water to drink after 7 whole days. Fortunately or unfortunately, there will be no form of inspiration or motivation coming from this because as I am today, I still watch Korean dramas like crazy. So let’s say between that time and now, I’ve seen more than 10 new dramas! And that is a lot because one drama has about 16 episodes with a running time of 50 minutes on average. Now just imagine how much of this I’m consuming! Phew!
In other news, still addicted to watching K-dramas, but I’m also now learning Korean so I guess that is a win for me. I found a way to make watching the dramas productive and now my conscience doesn’t prick me so much anymore.
That said, *flexes fingers and cracks knuckles*, if you want me to recommend K-dramas for you to watch let me know. You can either leave me a comment or send me an email by clicking this. Just let me know what you like; the type of genres you’re into and I will recommend at least 3 dramas for you to try out. This is great, Chris!
Dramas, movies are helpful in learning languages. I think you should stick to them because the interest (passion) is there and that’s important when learning a language.
Well done👏🏾
